Intervention på Christiansborg

Five days before youth from around Europe will come to Copenhagen to join the first LYM action week in Denmark, October 15-22, The Danish LYM-members, joined by Ludwig, shook up the political elite of Denmark. Every year, the City of Copenhagen has a socalled "culture-night". From 6 p.m. to 12 p.m. all museums, churches and public institutions are open to the public, that is, if you paid 8 euros for a culture-night badge. As part of those activities the parliament was open for the public, and all the parties had arranged happenings, where "the people" for once could meet their elected representatives (and eat free cookies, have lottery, get free balloons, etc. "politics for the people"). Most of the parties had their most prominent members of the Danish parliament and the European Parliament present. The LYM decided to take this golden opportunity to confront the parliamentarians with reality.

Eight LYM members formed three truth squads that went through the parliament hunting for the political leaders of Denmark. We were armed with copies of Lyn's most recent document "Europe and the U.S.A. today", copies of the two recent issues of our Danish newsletter Agro-Nyt, that has extensive coverage of Arnold Schwarzenegger and his backers, and our literature in Danish on a New Bretton Woods.

We spoke to, and gave literature to the Prime Minister, two other key ministers, the leader of the opposition, and about 15-20 other parliamentarians. We discussed the global financial crises and the LaRouche New Bretton Woods solution to it, challenging them to invite LaRouche to Copenhagen to present his program to the parliament and asking them to meet with LYM in the week of action. The Danish participation in the illegal war in Iraq, the beast-man Arnold and the parallels to the 30's was also discussed.

The LYM members were quite shocked to find how shallow, uninformed and uninterested in the truth and the solutions the parliamentarians were. Only the top persons in the parties had an inkling of what we were talking about, the more junior members of parliament simply stood with open mouth trying to follow the briefings. All of the parliamentarians recognized our monthly newsletter Agro-Nyt, and most of them admitted, that they sometimes read it (it is send to all members of parliament). The Prime minister, a slick clone of Tony Blair, a control freak who never does anything without consulting his spin-doctors, lost his nerve when confronted with LYM. "Oh no, it's you again", he exclaimed, frowning and grinning. He caught himself in this impermissible loss of temper, and quickly got his professional mask back on, and proceeded to talk without engaging in a real discussion, while franticly trying to escape under the pretext of signing autographs to some kids. Maja called him to order, and scolded him for him trying to avoid meeting with LYM and discussing reality.

Two other ministers ran into us several times. One of them was happy to talk, and admitted that he often reads the litterature, he gets from us. Unfortunately, he mostly engaged in sophistry and was clinging to two paradoxical arguments: 1) That the U.S. is running up an extreme public deficit, but they can do that because everybody else needs dollars, and 2) The primary function of a government is to ensure that it never spends more money than it earns. Since the U.S. has such a flexible economy, they will automatically recover, and we in Denmark should do nothing but balancing our own books. he said. He was told, that we would get back to him as the crises progresses.

Another minister had a very heated argument with Andreas on the Danish war policy and other issues. When he ran into one of the other truth squads, he totally lost control and shouted: "You sound just like the other guy, I spoke to. What are you guys, a sect? What's the Schiller Institute anyway?" He ran away without listenming to the answer.

The responses from other parliamentarians were very mixed. One social democrat said: "LaRouche is right-wing" and ran off, others took literature and discussed with us, and some will try to meet with LYM during the week of action. One leftwing parliamentarian said: "LaRouche is a fascist", but got severely shaken and moved when the LYM-organizer challenged her on that, and proved her wrong. A EU parliamentarian from a government party responded very well. At first, he tried to defend the U.S. as "our old allies" but a thorough discussion on the neocons, Arnold and Sharon brought forth his own doubts the present world order. We had a dialogue on the ongoing collapse of the American system. He thought it would be a good idea to invite LaRouche, but complained: "I'm afraid, that if LaRouche comes to talk, there won't be too many listening." What a fool!

Most of the body language of the leading parliamentarians revealed: I have to listen to you saying this, since others are watching us, but I would really prefer not to discuss reality with you. At the same time they couldn't help being a little envious: Among all of the political parties and visitors the LYM stood out as being the only ones radiating determination and passion. When the government later that night met for a late dinner, you can be sure that LaRouche and LYM has been a hot topic.

Outside the parliament, LYM-member Maja ran into a peace-rally against the occupation of Iraq. Somebody shouted from the stage: "Does anybody have some moving words to end this rally?" Maja marched on stage and told the crowd that she was representing the LaRouche Youth Movement, and that she had just been inside the Parliament to speak with the politicians. She described the panic reaction of the Prime Minister, when he recognized the LYM, and her fight to keep his attention during the discussion. She reported on our meetings with the politicians, who knew nothing about the real world, and who kept denying the existence of a financial crisis. And she described how frustrating it was to realize that these people, who knows so little and do nothing to learn anything, actually are responsible for the well being of millions. Then, she talked about the neo-cons and Arnold Schwarzenegger, discribing our fight for a new economical system, a new Bretton Woods, and our coming action-week and the need for all the youth to join us in taking responsibility for the future. As she walked off stage several people came over to hug her. The Danish political elite has now been forewarned: The Copenhagen LYM will make sure that the real issues will be on the agenda when youth from around Europe join us in turning Copenhagen and Denmark upside down.
